Melatonin strips and melatonin gummies deliver the same hormone. Here's how they compare on the things that matter: dose, sugar and convenience.
Dose accuracy
This is the biggest difference between products, not formats. A 2023 study in JAMA (Cohen et al.) tested melatonin gummies sold in the US and found they contained 74% to 347% of the labelled amount. An earlier study in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine (Erland & Saxena, 2017) found melatonin supplements ranged from 83% below to 478% above their labels. Whatever format you choose, pick a brand that lists an exact dose.
Sugar
Most gummies contain a few grams of sugar per serving, which you're eating right before brushing your teeth and going to bed. Strips are sweetened with stevia and have no sugar.
Convenience
Gummies need to be chewed; pills need water. A strip dissolves on your tongue in seconds. Neither format is proven to work faster, so take either 20 to 30 minutes before bed.
How much melatonin?
Lower doses are common in research, and more isn't necessarily better. Our melatonin dose guide goes through the evidence. MindStrips Sleep Strips contain 1mg melatonin with valerian root, chamomile, lavender and hibiscus.
The short version
- Choose a product with a precise, listed dose.
- Skip the sugar if you can.

Check with your doctor before using melatonin if you're pregnant, nursing, under 18 or taking medication.
